NECESSITIES OF LIFE FOOD PANTRY
AIDS Project Ventura County's Food Pantry has been in operation since April 2000. The Pantry is grant and donation-funded to provide ongoing supplemental nutritional assistance to low income HIV-positive individuals and their dependents who qualify according to Federal income guidelines.
In January 2010, after a six month reevaluation period, Pantry staff shifted to distributing non-perishable food items in an effort to make optimal use of already limited funding. In a collaboration effort with Ventura County Public Health, the Food Pantry is now located at 3147 Loma Vista Road, Ventura - next to the immunology department headquarters.
REFERRAL AND ADVOCACY
Ventura County Rainbow Alliance staff works with consumers to ensure that they are linked to medical care, mental health services, low-cost or free legal services, and, if they qualify through income documentation, the agency's food pantry.
Staff collaborates and networks with other area service providers including the Transitional Case Management Project (which works with men and women being released from prison), Ventura County Public Health HIV/AIDS Nurse Case Management, Immunology Clinic and other community-based organizations to identify underserved Ventura County residents living with HIV or AIDS.
Effective referral and advocacy services mean that someone who is newly diagnosed with HIV and may not know where to turn for assistance can work with trained staff and peer advocates for referrals to medical care and social services.
